Amplifiers

In an attempt to guide you, we have listed a few of the common basic questions.
Q: What is the difference between acoustic amps, bass amps and guitar amps
A: Acoustic amps often have multiple designed speakers with circuitry designed to handle the preamp pickups of electric/acoustic guitars. Many times the acoustic amp will cater to lower frequencies and eliminate sound feedback while maintaining a clear, clean, crisp tone.
Bass amps are traditionally one or two larger heavy duty, low frequency speakers with cabinets designed for the bottom/bass tones of the electric bass guitars.
Guitar amps are designed for multiple applications of sound. Primarily mid-range to high frequencies speakers with circuitry designed for clean jazz tones, crunchy rock’n roll or screamin heavy metal.
Q: What’s the difference between a solid state amp and a tube amp? Which amp is better?
A: Solid State amps are built with transistors and semiconductors on circuit boards. This construction generally is lighter in weight, smaller in size and less expensive to purchase.
Tube amps use a variety of glass vacuum tubes in conjunction with a premium grade of speaker(s) to create a warmer, smoother sound. Quality tube amps will be more expensive to own and maintain, but the tone benefit can be worth the investment. Both amps will serve guitarists very well and normally the decision boils down to hooking up your guitar to the amp in your price range. Always try amps out before you buy one!
Q: What’s the best amp for a beginning guitar player and how much will it cost?
A: For the amateur musician, the solid state practice amp of 10 watts to 20 watts will work very well. Northern Music Service has a selection of name brand amps for entry level guitar and bass players. Plan for an investment of around $100 with many different features to choose from.
